Transitional Housing Program
The Elizabeth Stone House Transitional Housing Program provides apartments for up to 18 months for women and children referred by homeless shelters, domestic violence shelters, and other agencies serving women in crisis. Designed to reflect “real life,” the program provides a near-independent living environment. Residents occupy their own apartments; participate in weekly house meetings, advocacy, and support groups; and take advantage of a range of other support services.
Residents have access to all services described in the Help for You and Help for Your Family sections of this website. In addition, the Elizabeth Stone House provides other services and material goods that help promote security and safety or help women accomplish their goals. For example, when women arrive at the Elizabeth Stone House they may have very limited possessions and cash. We make sure that each woman has basic material goods (sheets, kitchen and bathroom supplies, etc.), but most important we help remove obstacles to self improvement, such as lack of transportation and child care. We fund both when necessary so that women can go to work, take classes (GED, college courses, vocational classes), look for permanent housing, or attend meetings relevant to meeting their goals (Alcoholics or Narcotics Anonymous, meetings with teachers, court sessions, etc.).
Additionally, the Elizabeth Stone House helps residents who are ready to transition into their own apartments gather the materials, furniture, and household goods that they need through our new
House to Home initiative. While ESH cannot promise that residents will receive every item that they want, interested residents should talk to their advocates about their needs.
