Child Witness to Violence
The Elizabeth Stone House offers a Child Witness to Violence Program for children between the ages of 8 and 12. The program is based on a 12-week curriculum developed for the Massachusetts Department of Children and Families and adapted to meet the particular needs of our participants, with particular regard to the activity levels or the children at the Stone House. While this is a non-clinical program, it includes advocacy and referral services, so that children with an identified need for clinical services will be able to receive them. The program intends: 1) to help children identify the source and responsibility for violence they have witnessed and experienced as resting outside themselves; 2) to help them begin to cope with the trauma they have experienced because of violence; 3) to help them identify different types of violence; 4) to help them learn to keep themselves safe; and 5) to help them learn non-violent ways of resolving conflict.
